DR Congo Tours

Mountain gorillas in Virunga, the lowland gorillas of Kahuzi-Biega, a night beside the lava lake of Nyiragongo and the bonobos of Kinshasa.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is Africa's great wilderness. Virunga National Park, the oldest park in Africa, protects mountain gorillas and Mount Nyiragongo, whose summit crater holds the largest lava lake on Earth. Watching it glow at night from the crater rim is one of the great experiences of African travel.

Further south, Kahuzi-Biega National Park is the best place to see eastern lowland gorillas, the largest gorillas of all, and in the west the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary near Kinshasa cares for bonobos, found only in Congo. Many of our Congo trips are combined with Rwanda, starting and ending in Kigali.

Best time to go

June to September and December to February are the driest months. Gorilla treks and the Nyiragongo hike run all year when the parks are open.

Eastern Congo trips run only when Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega are open to visitors and travel advice allows. We confirm this with the parks before every booking and can switch to Rwanda or Uganda if needed.
