Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Londorossi Gate to Lemosho Big Tree Camp

    Elevation: 2,650 m · Walking time: 2-3 hours

    Register at Londorossi gate, drive through farmland to the Lemosho road head and walk an easy forest path to camp.

  2. Day 2

    Shira One Camp

    Elevation: 3,550 m · Walking time: 6-8 hours

    Leave the forest for moorland with giant heather and climb steadily to the rim of the Shira Plateau, then cross part of it to camp.

  3. Day 3

    Lava Tower to Great Barranco Valley

    Elevation: 3,900 m · Walking time: 7-9 hours

    A morning climb to lunch near the Lava Tower junction, then a descent to the bottom of the Great Barranco Valley, a campsite sheltered by cliffs.

  4. Day 4

    Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

    Elevation: 4,000 m · Walking time: 4-5 hours

    Climb the steep Barranco Wall, then follow the south-eastern flank of Kibo with views of the Southern Icefields to Karanga, the last water point before the summit.

  5. Day 5

    Karanga to Barafu Camp

    Elevation: 4,600 m · Walking time: 3-5 hours

    An easy path over compacted scree to Barafu, with a short acclimatisation walk up to 4,800 m. Rest early before the summit.

  6. Day 6

    Summit day: Uhuru Peak

    Elevation: 5,895 m · Walking time: 10-15 hours

    Start about 1 am by torchlight to reach Stella Point (5,735 m) for sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak if you feel strong. Descend to Millennium Camp.

  7. Day 7

    Descent to Mweka Gate

    Elevation: 1,650 m · Walking time: 4-6 hours

    A long descent through forest to Mweka Gate, then on through coffee and banana farms to Mweka village.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need climbing skills?

No. Kilimanjaro is a trek, not a technical climb, and needs no special equipment or climbing skills. You do need to be fit.

How many people reach the summit?

On the seven-day Machame route, more than 95% of our participants reach the top, thanks to the extra acclimatisation day and careful planning. Success rates are lower on shorter routes.

Is insurance required?

Yes. Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is required for the climb.

Are tips included?

No. Tips for the guides, porters and cook are customary and are not included in the price.
