Rwanda Safaris
The land of a thousand hills: mountain gorillas in the Virunga volcanoes, chimpanzees in Nyungwe, the Big Five in Akagera and the shores of Lake Kivu.
Rwanda is small, green and easy to travel. From Kigali, one of Africa's cleanest and safest capitals, it takes about two and a half hours to reach Volcanoes National Park, where mountain gorillas live on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes.
In the southwest, Nyungwe Forest has chimpanzees and a canopy walk high above the trees. In the east, Akagera National Park is home to lions, rhinos, elephants and giraffes, and in the west the beaches of Lake Kivu are perfect for a few quiet days.
Best time to go
June to September and December to February are the driest months and the most comfortable for trekking. Gorillas can be visited all year, and permits should be booked well in advance.
