About Nyerere National Park
The former northern Selous, a wild southern park along the Rufiji River, with boat safaris, walking safaris and few other visitors.
Nyerere National Park, the former northern Selous Game Reserve, is one of the largest protected areas in Africa and the main park of Tanzania's southern circuit. The Rufiji River and its lakes shape the landscape.
It is a quieter, wilder alternative or addition to the northern circuit, with activities you cannot do in the northern parks.
Wildlife
Elephant, hippo, crocodile, buffalo, giraffe, lion and wild dog live here, and the river and lakes attract large numbers of water birds.
Best time to visit
The dry season from June to October is best for game viewing. Some camps close during the heavy rains in April and May, so dates matter.
Where to stay
Riverside camps and lodges are small and often fly-in. We select them to match your budget and dates.

Frequently asked questions
Can I combine Nyerere with the northern parks?
Yes, but it means an internal flight. Many travellers choose either the northern or the southern circuit for a first trip, then return for the other.
