A first safari is exciting, and a little preparation makes it better. Here are ten things we tell every first-time traveller.
- 1. Expect early mornings. Predators are most active at sunrise, so game drives often start soon after dawn.
- 2. Pack layers. Mornings and evenings are cool, afternoons can be hot.
- 3. Bring binoculars. They make a big difference for birds and distant animals.
- 4. Wildlife is wild. Sightings are never guaranteed, but a good guide greatly improves your chances.
- 5. Stay in the vehicle. Follow your guide's instructions at all times.
- 6. Take it slowly. Four to six days is a good length for a first trip, with a rest day if you can.
- 7. Think about malaria. Ask your doctor about anti-malarial medication well before you go.
- 8. Arrange insurance. Choose comprehensive travel and medical cover.
- 9. Carry some cash. Small notes are useful for tips and small purchases.
- 10. Tell us what you want. A safari built around your interests, dates and budget is better than a standard package.
Our guide to a first-time safari in the travel guide covers each of these in more detail.
