Zanzibar's beaches are all white sand and warm water, but each coast has its own character, and the tide makes a big difference.
Nungwi and Kendwa, north
These beaches are famous for being swimmable at all times of the tide. They are lively, with a wide choice of hotels and restaurants, and have beautiful sunsets. Sunset dhow cruises leave from here.
Paje, east
A wide, shallow lagoon with a steady wind makes Paje a centre for kitesurfing. At low tide the sea goes far out, so check the tide table if you want to swim.
Kizimkazi and the south
Quieter and more private. Kizimkazi is known for dolphin tours and for a 12th-century mosque.
Stone Town
Not a beach destination, but a good base for a night or two, with history and food.
Which is best?
For swimming at any time and a lively atmosphere, choose the north. For kitesurfing and an active stay, choose Paje. For peace and quiet, choose the south.
